At the 2019 SingularityU Canada Summit, over 1200 people attended the live event held in Edmonton, with another 6000 virtually joining in from around the globe! We were proud to produce the summit and the social event, SU After Dark, in the capital of Alberta; a community that fully embraced the Summit and it's core message – that exponential change is taking place throughout the world and we all need to be involved in how we design the future.

Surrounded by Indigenous burial grounds, a sub-station, a water treatment plant and the North Saskatchewan River, the historic Rossdale Power Plant, closed for over 30 years, was the secret venue for SU After Dark. Our team collaborated to execute a once-in-a-lifetime experience for guests and excited Edmontonians during the SUCanada Summit in 2019. With under 70 days from the first site visit and only 23 days for planning and execution the team pulled off the unimaginable - transforming a decommissioned 120 year-old power plant into a monumental experience and historic moment for the city.

  • The Experience

    The Summit

Through a branded mobile app, attendees were able to register for the conference with the use of facial recognition technology. The registration process was seamless in getting 1,100 people through the doors and into the two-day conference.

Both days saw guests experience a series of discussions and around the global challenges we're facing into the future, specifically health, prosperity, citizenship, and energy. While attendees were provided overviews of these challenges on the main stage, the small forum stage gave presenters with an opportunity to drill down on topics in a more intimate environment. A third area, the youth stage, provided 1,000 kids from local schools with an opportunity to hear versions of the content being provided on the main stage.

The content was webcast to a variety of locations across the country, where 6,000 curious Canadians gathered to understand SingularityU's key message: that exponential change is taking place throughout the world and we all need to be involved in how we design the future.

    SU After Dark

Due to its location along the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River, attendees were bused from the convention centre where the SingularityU Canada Summit was taking place. Guests were greeted by buskers as they made their way across the pathways, treated to rides in an autonomous vehicle around the site, and once through the front door, enjoyed a light show that truly highlighted the size and scope of the plant, essentially bringing it back to life.

Local dance troupe, The Business, helped kick start on the on-stage entertainment, while guests noshed on food and drink provided by local caterers strategically set up in a variety of locations throughout the building. They were followed by a performance from electronic harpist M'Michelle, and Edmonton DJ Thomas Culture.

The evening ended with a silent disco, where hundreds of SingularityU attendees donned headset and swayed to the music in their heads.

  • Whizbang Moment[s]

    The Summit

Our Whizbang moment was when our whole team was invited on stage at the end of the summit, introduced (with rousing applause) and welcomed to the SingularityU Canada Family.

    SU After Dark

The transformation made to the power plant in under 68 days was a huge team effort, in this case collaboration and trust win the Whizbang moment!

Oh, and the tremendous teamwork to cover the 3,522 square feet of dugout to create a safe floor for guests!
